06 Nov 🌺 Remembrance Sunday, 8th November – Remembering Our Heroes at Warfield Park
As Remembrance Sunday approaches, we come together as a community to reflect, remember and pay tribute to the brave men and women who served our country, those who made the ultimate sacrifice and the families whose lives were forever changed by war.
At Warfield Park, Remembrance holds a particularly special meaning, with our own history closely connected to the events of the Second World War.
Warfield Park’s Wartime History
Warfield Park has a fascinating history, shaped by both wartime service and the years of rebuilding that followed.
Captain Ian Robert Kumar Maclaren, whose family name remains an important part of our park’s heritage, served on D-Day, helping to coordinate vital transport and supplies for Allied troops in Normandy.
During the Second World War, Warfield Park itself also played a role in the war effort. The former Manor House was used by Allied forces as a listening station, while Nissen huts, wooden cabins and tracks were constructed around the estate to support military activity.
Following the war, Captain Maclaren helped transform Warfield Park into a place people could call home. What began in 1947 with permission for just 12 caravans gradually grew into the welcoming community of more than 500 park homes we know today.
His legacy is not only part of our history but continues to live on through the wonderful community that calls Warfield Park home.
A Time to Pause, Reflect and Remember
🌺 On Remembrance Sunday, 8th November, at 11am, we invite all our residents and the wider community to join us in observing two minutes of silence.
It is a moment to remember those who never returned home, those who served with courage and determination, and the countless families who carried the loss and memories of their loved ones.
We will also pause again on Wednesday, 11th November, Armistice Day, to honour their memory and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many.
The flags have now been raised at Warfield Park Community Hall, standing as a symbol of our gratitude, respect and remembrance.
A Community That Remembers
One of the loveliest things about Warfield Park is the kindness and thoughtfulness shown by those who help make our community so special.
We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful Women’s Institute, who have once again decorated our post box with beautiful hand-knitted poppies. This thoughtful display is a touching tribute to those we remember and a lovely reminder of the care and community spirit around us.
We are also incredibly grateful to Anitia, Peter and all our dedicated volunteers, who generously give their time and energy to caring for our memorial garden.
Their hard work and dedication help create a peaceful and beautiful space where residents and visitors can take a quiet moment to reflect. These acts of kindness mean so much to everyone at Warfield Park, and we truly appreciate all that they do.
💜 Remembering Our Four-Legged Heroes
Among the beautiful tributes around the park, you may also notice purple poppies.
While the traditional red poppy honours those who served and sacrificed their lives, the purple poppy remembers the many animals who also played an important role during wartime.
From horses carrying supplies and equipment to dogs delivering messages and helping soldiers, countless animals served alongside our troops, often in incredibly difficult and dangerous conditions.
Many never returned, and their loyalty, courage and sacrifice deserve to be remembered too.
The purple poppies are a touching reminder that remembrance extends to all those who suffered and lost their lives through war, including our animal companions.
We Will Remember Them
As we approach Remembrance Sunday, we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate the beautiful poppy displays, visit our memorial garden and reflect on the sacrifices made by generations before us.
Whether you join the two-minute silence, wear a poppy or simply take a quiet moment to remember, every gesture of remembrance matters.
At Warfield Park, we are proud of our history, grateful for our community and thankful to everyone who helps keep these important memories alive.
To those who gave so much, we owe so much.
We will remember them. Lest we forget. 🌺
