04 Mar A Look Back at the Beginnings of Our Warfield Park Community Association
This September marks a very special milestone at Warfield Park — 50 years of our Community Association bringing residents together, so we’re taking a look back at how it all began and how our much-loved Community Hall came to be.
The story starts in September 1976, when Warfield Park’s then Managing Director, Len Sumner, together with residents Kay and Laurie Sabine, shared a vision of creating a Community Association that would encourage friendship, connection and activities for everyone living on the park.
The very first meeting took place ‘in the open air’ on The Elms on 17 September 1976. Residents were invited to come along and share their thoughts about what a community group could look like. The response was so positive that, right there and then, a committee was chosen by a show of hands. Just a few days later, the first committee meeting was held, where a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were appointed — marking the official start of the Association.
In the early days, facilities were simple but full of character. Len Sumner arranged for a single caravan to be placed near Wellingtonia 14A (an area that is now copse land). The caravan opened in February 1977 and quickly became known as “The Centre.” It was here that the then Vicar of Warfield, Reverend Tony Wells, held services every fortnight, bringing residents together not just socially but spiritually as well.
From those humble beginnings, the Community Association grew steadily as more events and activities were introduced. What began with a caravan eventually developed into the Community Hall we enjoy today, which has become the heart of the park’s social life. The hall hosts weekly classes, coffee mornings, social events, weekend gatherings and organised day trips, all run by residents for residents — just as the founders originally envisioned.
While recently looking through our archives, we came across something rather special: the original 2002 sketch of the proposed Community Hall design. Seeing the early concept drawings of the building we still use today is a wonderful reminder of how ideas on paper can grow into something that truly brings a community together. And we have to say — it still looks fantastic today!
As we approach this 50-year celebration, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the dedication, friendships and community spirit that have shaped Warfield Park over the decades. What started as a simple open-air meeting and a single caravan has grown into a vibrant and welcoming community that continues to thrive today.
Here’s to 50 years of memories, laughter and neighbourly spirit — and to many more wonderful years ahead. 🥂
