11 Jul Beat the Heatwave: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping Your Park Home Cool
Phew… is anyone else melting?
If you’ve stepped outside recently, you’ll know that the UK has been experiencing some truly freakish weather, with temperatures soaring into the 30°Cs. While many of us dream of sunshine all year round, after a few sleepless nights it’s safe to say we’re ready for a bit of British drizzle again!
Living in a park home at Warfield Park and The Paddocks has many advantages, but like any home, hot weather can make indoor temperatures climb quickly. The good news? There are plenty of simple ways to keep your home cooler and make those warm nights much more comfortable.
Here are our favourite tips – including a few you might not have thought of!
🌞 1. Become a Curtain Ninja
The sun is lovely… just not when it’s turning your lounge into a sauna.
Keep curtains, blinds or reflective window coverings closed on the sunny side of your home during the hottest part of the day. Open them again once the sun moves away.
Bonus tip: White or reflective blinds bounce more heat away than darker colours.
🌙 2. Open Up… But Only at the Right Time
Throwing every window open at midday might seem sensible, but if it’s hotter outside than inside, you’re simply inviting the heat in.
Instead:
- Open windows early in the morning.
- Close them during the hottest hours.
- Reopen them in the evening when temperatures begin to drop.
If you have windows on opposite sides of your home, create a gentle cross-breeze for natural cooling.
🧊 3. Freeze Your Hot Water Bottle!
Who says hot water bottles are only for winter?
Fill one with cold water (or use an ice pack wrapped in a towel) and place it at the foot of your bed before you go to sleep. Your feet will thank you.
🛏️ 4. Pop Your Bedding in the Freezer
It sounds odd… but hear us out!
Place your pillowcase or bedsheet in a sealed plastic bag and leave it in the freezer for 20 minutes before bedtime. It won’t stay cold all night, but it’s wonderfully refreshing when you first climb into bed.
🪴 5. Bring Nature Indoors
Houseplants don’t just look lovely—they can also help improve humidity and make your home feel fresher.
Some great choices include:
- Peace Lilies
- Spider Plants
- Areca Palms
Plus, they give your home a relaxing holiday feel.
🍦 6. Eat Like You’re on Holiday
When it’s 32°C, nobody wants a roast dinner!
Swap heavy meals for:
- Fresh salads
- Watermelon
- Berries
- Yoghurt
- Ice lollies (strictly for hydration… obviously!)
Your kitchen stays cooler too because you’re not using the oven.
🧺 7. Give Your Appliances the Day Off
Dishwashers, tumble dryers and ovens all create surprising amounts of heat.
If possible:
- Wash clothes early morning or late evening.
- Air dry laundry outside.
- Save baking for another day.
Your home (and your energy bill) will appreciate it.
🧊 8. DIY Air Conditioning
No air conditioning?
No problem.
Place a bowl of ice or frozen water bottles in front of a fan. As the air blows over the ice, you’ll enjoy a surprisingly refreshing cool breeze.
It’s simple, inexpensive and surprisingly effective.
💤 9. Sleep Like an Egyptian
Yes, it’s a real thing!
Lightly dampen a cotton sheet with cool water before bed. It helps your body stay comfortable as temperatures rise.
Just don’t soak it—you want cool, not soggy!
🦶 10. Cool Your Pulse Points
Running your wrists, feet or the back of your neck under cool water can lower your body temperature surprisingly quickly.
It’s one of the fastest ways to cool down without lowering the temperature of the whole room.
🌿 11. Create a Shady Oasis
If you have outdoor space around your park home, make the most of it.
A parasol, awning or even a few well-placed potted plants can provide shade and stop nearby surfaces radiating heat into your home.
🧊 12. The “Frozen Flannel” Trick
Pop a clean flannel or small towel in the freezer for half an hour.
Place it around your neck while watching TV or reading a book. Instant relief!
🐾 13. Don’t Forget Your Four-Legged Friends
If you have pets, make sure they stay cool too.
Keep fresh water available, provide shaded spots and avoid walking dogs during the hottest part of the day. Early mornings and late evenings are much kinder on little paws.
😂 14. Embrace the Great British Heatwave!
Let’s be honest…
In a few months we’ll probably be complaining about the rain and wishing we had this sunshine back!
So enjoy an ice cream, find a shady spot, stay hydrated and make the most of these rare summer days.
🧦 15. Freeze Your Socks
It might sound a little bonkers, but it works!
Pop a pair of clean socks into a sealed bag and leave them in the freezer for an hour before bed. Slip them on just before you turn in—cool feet can help lower your overall body temperature, making it much easier to drift off.
🍚 16. Make a DIY Rice Cooling Pack
Forget expensive cooling gadgets!
Fill a clean cotton sock with uncooked rice, tie the end and place it in the freezer for a couple of hours. It stays cool for surprisingly long and makes a perfect cooling pack for your neck, shoulders or feet.
💡 17. Ditch the Heat from Lights
Every light bulb creates a little heat, especially older-style bulbs.
Switch off unnecessary lights in the evening and create a cosy atmosphere with LED candles or battery-powered lanterns. You’ll save energy and keep your room a little cooler too.
🚿 18. Take a Lukewarm Shower
An icy cold shower sounds tempting, but it can actually have the opposite effect by making your body try to warm itself back up.
A lukewarm shower before bed gently lowers your body temperature and leaves you feeling refreshed without the shock.
🌬️ 19. Turn Your Fan Around
Here’s one many people don’t know.
If it’s cooler outside in the evening, point a fan out of an open window for 20–30 minutes before bed. It helps push trapped hot air outside instead of simply circulating it around your room.
🧴 20. Keep Your Moisturiser in the Fridge
Treat yourself to a little bedtime luxury.
Store your face cream, aloe vera gel or body lotion in the fridge. Applying it before bed feels wonderfully refreshing and can soothe skin that’s been warmed by the sun.
🥒 21. Try the Cucumber Spa Trick
Pop a couple of chilled cucumber slices over your eyes or forehead for ten minutes before bedtime.
It’s cooling, relaxing and gives you a mini spa treatment without leaving home!
🏕️ 22. Camp in the Coolest Room
Heat rises, so if your bedroom feels like a greenhouse, why not spend one particularly hot night in the coolest room of the house?
Think of it as indoor camping—minus the mosquitoes!
🧊 23. Freeze a Damp Tea Towel
Lightly dampen a tea towel or small towel, fold it into a freezer bag and chill it for around 30 minutes.
Drape it over your shoulders while relaxing or place it over your feet once you’re tucked into bed for instant cooling.
💦 24. Create a Bedside Cooling Station
Set yourself up for a comfortable night’s sleep by keeping a few essentials within easy reach:
- A bottle of ice-cold water
- A cooling face mist
- A handheld fan
- A frozen flannel in a zip-lock bag
If you wake up feeling too warm, everything you need is right beside you—no midnight trip to the kitchen required.
🍃 25. Hang a Damp Sheet in Front of an Open Window
This old-fashioned trick has been used for generations.
Hang a slightly damp cotton sheet or towel in front of an open window during the cooler evening hours. As the breeze passes through the fabric, it creates a gentle cooling effect that’s surprisingly refreshing—just be careful not to make the room too damp.
Stay Safe in the Heat
Remember to:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid direct sun during the hottest hours (11am–3pm).
- Wear lightweight clothing.
- Check on neighbours, friends and family, especially older residents.
- Never leave pets or children in parked vehicles.
