Bulbs to Plant Now for a Beautiful Spring Display

Autumn planting, spring magic – a little preparation now goes a long way.

As the days grow shorter and the autumn colours begin to appear, it’s the perfect time to start thinking ahead to spring.

Here at Warfield Park & The Paddocks, we love seeing our gardens come to life after the winter months. From cheerful daffodils to delicate snowdrops and colourful tulips, there’s something wonderful about those first signs of spring.

And the secret to a beautiful spring garden? It all starts now!

October is one of the best months to plant spring-flowering bulbs, giving them plenty of time to establish their roots before winter arrives.

Whether you have a spacious garden, a small flower bed or a few pots by your front door, planting bulbs is an easy and rewarding way to bring colour to your outdoor space.

Our Favourite Bulbs to Plant This Autumn

Snowdrops | January – March

These delicate white flowers are often the first to appear, bringing a little brightness to the colder months. Perfect for planting beneath trees or along garden borders. Snowdrops can be planted as dry bulbs in autumn, although they often establish better when planted ‘in the green’ after flowering.

Crocuses | February – March

Small but full of colour, crocuses are a lovely way to welcome spring. Their purple, yellow and white flowers look particularly beautiful when planted in groups across lawns or in pots.

Daffodils | February – April

Nothing says spring quite like a daffodil! These cheerful yellow blooms are easy to grow, return year after year and make a wonderful addition to almost any garden.

Hyacinths | March – April

If you love fragrant flowers, hyacinths are a must. Their beautiful clusters of pink, purple, blue and white blooms are perfect for pots near doorways, where you can enjoy their lovely scent.

Grape Hyacinths | March – April

These charming little blue flowers are ideal for filling gaps in borders. They look especially pretty planted alongside daffodils and tulips.

Tulips | April – May

For a splash of colour later in spring, tulips are hard to beat. Available in almost every shade imaginable, they’re perfect for creating eye-catching displays in pots and flower beds. November is usually the ideal time to plant them, once the soil has cooled.

Alliums | May – June

With their striking purple globe-shaped flowers, alliums add height and interest to the garden, helping to extend the colour into early summer. They’re also loved by pollinators!

A Few Simple Planting Tips

You don’t need to be an experienced gardener to enjoy beautiful spring flowers. A little preparation is all it takes.

  • Choose a sunny spot: Most spring bulbs thrive in sunshine or partial shade.
  • Make sure the soil drains well: Bulbs don’t like sitting in waterlogged soil, particularly over winter.
  • Plant at the right depth: As a general rule, plant bulbs around two to three times their own height deep.
  • Plant in groups: Clusters of bulbs create a much more natural and colourful display than planting them individually.
  • Mix and match: Choose varieties that flower at different times to enjoy colour throughout spring.

A Garden Full of Colour, Month After Month

One of the loveliest things about planting bulbs is watching the garden change as the seasons progress.

Imagine delicate snowdrops appearing in February, followed by cheerful daffodils and fragrant hyacinths in March. By April, colourful tulips take centre stage, before beautiful alliums make their appearance in May.

With a little planning, you can enjoy something new flowering throughout the spring months.

A Little Autumn Effort, A Beautiful Spring Reward

There’s something particularly satisfying about planting a few bulbs in autumn and almost forgetting about them, only to be greeted by a wonderful display of colour a few months later.

So, why not make the most of a crisp autumn afternoon, pop on your gardening gloves and get planting?

Whether it’s a colourful pot by your front door or a beautiful display in your garden, those small efforts now will be well worth it when spring arrives.

Happy planting from all of us at Warfield Park!
