🌼 Creating a Wildlife Haven: Warfield Park’s Nature Projects for the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature 2026 🌼

At Warfield Park, our commitment to nature runs deep. As part of the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature 2026, we’re working hard to enhance biodiversity, improve habitats, and support the many species that share our beautiful surroundings. This year, we’re proud to build on our progress with several exciting wildlife initiatives that help create a richer, more resilient local ecosystem.

A key part of our efforts aligns with the Home Sweet Home Wildlife Challenge, which encourages parks to put up artificial homes to help wildlife survive and thrive. This includes bird boxes, bat boxes, bee hotels, hedgehog homes, and insect stacks — all of which are proven to benefit a wide range of species.

🦔 February: Hedgehog Homes Installed Across the Park

Earlier this year, in February, we took an important step by installing several hedgehog homes around the park. These shelters give hedgehogs safe, dry places to nest, hibernate, and raise young.

The Home Sweet Home Challenge encourages parks to consider homes for species like hedgehogs, who particularly benefit from secure artificial shelters.

By adding these homes, we’re supporting a species that has seen national declines in recent years while helping increase biodiversity across our woodland and grassland habitats.

🐝 Introducing Bee Hives: Working With Local Experts

As another part of our pledge, Jenna contacted the Wokingham Beekeepers’ Association to explore installing managed bee hives at Warfield Park. Beekeepers Mark and Georgina visited the park earlier this year, helping us identify the perfect well‑secluded location, safely away from public areas.

Our amazing grounds team then prepared the site — improving access for heavy equipment and securing the area from curious wildlife — ensuring a safe and stable foundation for our incoming hive residents.

🍯 The Incredible Effort Behind Every Drop of Honey

To truly appreciate the importance of supporting pollinators, it’s worth remembering just how hard honeybees work:

  • It takes around 12 worker bees their entire six‑week lifespan to produce just one teaspoon of honey.
  • That single teaspoon requires over 30,000 flower visits.
  • To make a standard 1 lb jar of honey, a colony must visit roughly 2 million flowers.
  • And a single bee, in its whole lifetime, produces only a tiny fraction of a teaspoon.

These remarkable facts highlight just how vital bees are — and how extraordinary their contribution is compared to their size. By offering well‑insulated, high‑quality poly hives in a safe, protected environment, we’re giving our new colonies the best possible chance to thrive.

🌿 Why Bees Matter: Environmental & Biodiversity Benefits

The introduction of managed bee hives aligns perfectly with the Home Sweet Home Wildlife Challenge goal of supporting species through dedicated housing and habitat creation.

Bees bring essential benefits, including:
Enhanced pollination supporting wildflowers, shrubs, and native trees
More food sources for birds, mammals, and insects as plant diversity increases
A stronger local ecosystem, more resilient to environmental change

Support for declining pollinator populations

We’re excited to welcome the hives — and their buzzing residents — this April.

🦇 Coming Soon: Bat Boxes & Nesting Boxes in the SANG Area

As we continue to expand our habitat‑supporting infrastructure, we’re also planning to install bat boxes and bird nesting boxes across the SANG (Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace) area.

🌳 Continuing Our Journey to a Wilder Warfield Park

Each of these steps — from hedgehog homes to bee hives, and soon bat and bird boxes — demonstrates our dedication to building a greener, richer, and more biodiverse park environment.

We’re proud to be part of the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature and to work alongside local wildlife groups, conservation experts, and our own incredible team. These initiatives not only improve the park for wildlife but create deeper opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy, appreciate, and reconnect with nature.
