Helping Nature Thrive: Bug Hotels Refilled 🐜🐞🕷️🐛🦟

In July last year, a group of Year 10 students from King’s Academy Easthampstead Park joined us at Warfield Park in Berkshire for work experience. One of the activities they undertook was creating bug hotels for our SANG.

With the support of our grounds team, six wooden frames were built and then filled with natural materials found around the park, including bamboo, logs and pine cones. These materials were foraged by the students, with help from Lillie, the head groundsman’s daughter.

Over time, the materials inside the bug hotels dried out and settled, meaning they were in need of a refresh. To address this, the bug hotels have now been refilled, to ensure they continue to provide suitable habitats for insects and wildlife. This activity forms part of Warfield Park’s involvement in this year’s David Bellamy Pledge for Nature. We have taken on the challenge “Home Sweet Home”, which focuses on creating and maintaining artificial wildlife homes for the animals that live within the park. Restuffing and maintaining the bug hotels is one of the many ways we are supporting biodiversity and enhancing habitats across Warfield Park.
