04 Apr Spring at Warfield Park: What to Do If You Find a Baby Bird 🐣🌿
Springtime at Warfield Park in Berkshire — especially around The Paddocks — is one of the most beautiful times of year. Trees are in bloom, birdsong fills the air, and young wildlife begins to emerge.
It’s also the season when you might come across a baby bird on the ground. While it can be concerning, many of these little birds don’t actually need rescuing.
🐦 Not all baby birds are in trouble
If the bird is fully feathered and hopping around, it’s likely a fledgling. This is a natural stage where young birds leave the nest before they can fully fly.
Although they may look vulnerable, their parents are usually nearby, watching closely and continuing to feed them.
🖐️ When you can help
There are a few situations where stepping in is the right thing to do:
- If the bird is in danger 🚗
Near a road, pathway, or pets? You can gently move it a short distance to a safer spot, such as under a hedge or bush. The parents will still be able to find it. - If the bird is very young 🪺
If it has no feathers, it may have fallen from its nest. If you can see and safely reach the nest, placing it back is the best option. Don’t worry — birds won’t abandon their young due to human scent. - If the bird is injured ⚠️
If it appears hurt or has been caught by a cat, it needs urgent care. Place it in a ventilated box, keep it somewhere warm and quiet, and contact a wildlife rescue organisation as soon as possible.
🐾 Protecting wildlife at Warfield Park
With so much natural beauty surrounding Warfield Park and The Paddocks, we all play a part in protecting it.
Keeping dogs under control and supervising cats — particularly during fledgling season — can make a real difference in helping young birds survive.
💚 When in doubt
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to seek expert advice before intervening. Often, the kindest and most helpful thing we can do is simply give wildlife the space it needs to grow and thrive.
By working together, we can help ensure the birds of Warfield Park continue to flourish for generations to come 🌸🐣
