Fire-Proofing Your Park Home
While it’s virtually impossible to make a park home completely fireproof, there are however several sensible precautions you can take to reduce the risk of fire. Many of these are the same as those recommended for any home. By following a few simple tips, you can help keep yourself and your loved ones as safe as possible.
- Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Every park home should be equipped with at least one working smoke alarm. Test it regularly and replace the batteries when needed. If you’re unsure about installing one yourself, you can book a free Safe and Well Visit with the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service for assistance. This applies to carbon monoxide detectors as well.

A Lithex extinguisher is particularly useful, as it’s designed to tackle Lithium-ion battery fires (common in phones, laptops, and electric scooters), but it’s also effective on class A fires. ( see chart below for more details)
- Check Fire Extinguisher Expiration Dates Fire extinguishers are critical tools in emergencies, but they have a limited lifespan. Ensure you check the expiration date regularly and replace any outdated equipment. An expired extinguisher may fail to work effectively when needed, compromising safety.Consider a Fire Blanket
A fire blanket is a simple but effective safety item, especially in kitchens. Keep it within easy reach. - Check Electrical Equipment Regularly
Inspect appliances and sockets for signs of wear or damage, and repair any faults without delay. Unplug appliances overnight or when you’re away. - Avoid Multi-Adaptors
Multi-plug adaptors can easily become overloaded. Use them with caution or opt for surge-protected extension leads. - Don’t Block Vents
Ensure all air vents remain unobstructed for proper ventilation. - Stay Attentive When Cooking or Using Candles
Never leave cooking equipment or candles unattended. - Store Gas Cylinders Outside
Always keep gas cylinders in an external, well-ventilated area. - Plan Your Escape Route
Have a clear plan in place in case you need to leave your home quickly during an emergency. - Important Note for Warfield Park Residents
Fire extinguisher boxes are positioned no more than 30 metres apart throughout the park. These contain water extinguishers suitable for class A fires (combustible materials). An alarm will sound when the lid is lifted to alert nearby residents.Remember, you are not expected to fight a fire. Your safety—and the safety of others—comes first. If a fire breaks out, leave the area immediately and call the fire service without delay.
